The purpose of the Commission for Substance Abuse Prevention is to foster an environment that does not support the abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. The Commission serves as an advisory group to the Vice President for Student Affairs on any matter that affects the use or abuse of alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs in the University Community including but not limited to:
- The evaluation of the efficacy of present University programs, policies, procedures and practices as they relate to an environment which supports the legal and low-risk use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs;
- The identification of areas in which new or revised policies, programs, and/or procedures are needed to create an environment which supports the legal and low-risk use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs;
- The recommendation of initiatives which will lead to improved understanding of the life-threatening nature of alcohol and other drug abuse and makes prevention, intervention and treatment of alcohol and other drug related problems a high priority; and
- The recommendation of initiatives which foster an academic and work environment that values healthy lifestyle choices concerning alcohol, tobacco and other drug use.
